High School Playbook

This big play from RB Nick Davis helped the Hornets defeat Christ Church last week. Coach Jeff Murdock, however, was the real reason for Ware Shoals' success. As a head coach, Murdock finished with a winning season each of his six years and placed his team in the Upper State Championship for the second year in a row. Last season, the Hornets lost by a mere 8 points, but hopefully this year can make it one step further to the school's first state title appearance since 1983.

Dorman volleyball coach Paula Kirkland broke her state record of 10 championships by winning another this past Saturday. The Cavaliers compete in the highest classification in the state, and despite the competition, Coach Kirkland has been able to win 11 of the past 20 state championships. Her dominance is highlighted by her compassion and dedication, and High School Playbook congratulates her achievement as well as the entire team!

Playoff Preview
22 area teams remain in the playoff race, 9 of those coming from our 4A classifications. In case you're wondering when you look at the schedules, 4A playoffs are split up into 2 divisions, the first commonly known as the Big 16. In the 3A classifications, several of our area teams are matched up against each other, including a rematch between Clinton and Belton-Honea Path; Clinton took the first game 21-14. Daniel also faces a tough challenge when it hosts Chester, the team that defeated them last year in the Upper State Championship. In 2A, the most interesting storyline to follow is that if Woodruff and Abbeville both win they will face each other again. In Week 3, Woodruff won 36-35. Only 2 teams remain in A playoffs, and because they are facing each other, an Upstate team will definitely be in the Upper State championship!

Chris Miller did not allow his Rebels to be upset by Dorman two season in a row, and contained the potent Cavaliers offense to a mere 10 points. Byrnes remains #3 in the USA Today Super 25, and the Rebels are on the road to their 10th state championship.

The Mavs came out strong in Week 9 with this huge play to get Tiquention Coleman in the endzone and Mauldin never looked back. The "Hook and Ladder" is a rare trick play in football, but Mauldin executed it perfectly. Jeremiah McKie hit Anthony Stevens on his route, who then tossed it to speedster Tiquention Coleman for the score.
