Woodruff placed 5th in the AA State Cheer Finals last weekend, and we are very grateful for pics and videos from the event. TamF uploaded her photos almost very soon after the event, and this photo is very worthy of our Pic of the Week!

Daniel 14, Greenville 7, AAA Quarterfinals
Deandre Hopkins sealed the win with both a punt return for a TD and an interception in 4th quarter. Defense stole the spotlight tonight, as each team only gave up one touchdown (the Hopkins score was special teams). Although there was some controversy on a few calls, Daniel proved itself to be the better team and faces Clinton for the Upper State Championship next week.

Williston-Elko 44, Ware Shoals 20, A Div II Upper State Championships
The Hornets mounted a comeback in the second half, but it was not enough to get past one of the best A teams in the past decade. Williston-Elko moves on to yet another state championship appearance.

Gaffney 35, Summerville 28, 4A Division I Quarterfinals
Summerville scored 21 straight points in the first half and ended capitalizing on three Gaffney turnovers in the game. The Indians, however, scored 21 unanswered points after the half to defeated an outstanding Summerville squad for the second year in a row. Turnovers decided the second half as well, but Gaffney gained the upper hand. Another strong performance from DeEdward Burris now has Gaffney in Upper State Championship at rival Dorman.

Abbeville 37, Batesburg-Leesville 26,  AA Quarterfinals
The Panthers mounted a comeback against Batesburg-Leesville and never turned back. Jermaine Thackson proved once again to be the leader of this powerful Abbeville team. Abbeville will travel to Central next week for the Upper State Championship.

This big play from RB Nick Davis helped the Hornets defeat Christ Church last week. Coach Jeff Murdock, however, was the real reason for Ware Shoals' success. As a head coach, Murdock finished with a winning season each of his six years and placed his team in the Upper State Championship for the second year in a row. Last season, the Hornets lost by a mere 8 points, but hopefully this year can make it one step further to the school's first state title appearance since 1983.

Dorman volleyball coach Paula Kirkland broke her state record of 10 championships by winning another this past Saturday. The Cavaliers compete in the highest classification in the state, and despite the competition, Coach Kirkland has been able to win 11 of the past 20 state championships. Her dominance is highlighted by her compassion and dedication, and High School Playbook congratulates her achievement as well as the entire team!

Playoff Preview
22 area teams remain in the playoff race, 9 of those coming from our 4A classifications. In case you're wondering when you look at the schedules, 4A playoffs are split up into 2 divisions, the first commonly known as the Big 16. In the 3A classifications, several of our area teams are matched up against each other, including a rematch between Clinton and Belton-Honea Path; Clinton took the first game 21-14. Daniel also faces a tough challenge when it hosts Chester, the team that defeated them last year in the Upper State Championship. In 2A, the most interesting storyline to follow is that if Woodruff and Abbeville both win they will face each other again. In Week 3, Woodruff won 36-35. Only 2 teams remain in A playoffs, and because they are facing each other, an Upstate team will definitely be in the Upper State championship!

Chris Miller did not allow his Rebels to be upset by Dorman two season in a row, and contained the potent Cavaliers offense to a mere 10 points. Byrnes remains #3 in the USA Today Super 25, and the Rebels are on the road to their 10th state championship.
